ENJOY A COCKROACH-FREE ENVIRONMENT

Cockroaches are among the most disgusting of pests, and Utah has four species of them.

About 63% of all U.S. homes deal with cockroaches. They are not a sign of a dirty house. Even if your home is perfectly clean, cockroaches can find what they are looking for - food, water and warmth - in it.

Many people believe that roaches are afraid of light because they scatter when lights are turned on, but this is more likely to be because they are afraid of humans than light.

They enter homes through tiny gaps around doors, pipes, electrical lines, plumbing, sewer lines and other open spaces, as well as in infested boxes, grocery bags, beverage cartons, furniture, dry pet food and firewood.

In townhouses and apartment complexes, they can migrate between units. They prefer warm, dark, humid areas such as around the kitchen sink, in bathrooms, and in motor compartments of refrigerators, washing machines and other appliances.

Cockroaches feed on plant and animal products, including grease, starchy foods and sweets, and unprotected kitchen goods as well as on leather, book bindings, and wallpaper paste.

Cockroaches contaminate food with excrement and salivary secretions, and they leave unpleasant odors. Cockroaches also may carry disease such as E. coli and salmonella from one food source to the next. They can cause allergies.

Insulate or caulk loose windows or cracks in your foundation or walls to reduce the chance of cockroaches entering your home.
